Inside the PPA Europe 250 Barcelona Open: The Numbers Behind the Event

Five days, 30 countries, 289 players and 744 matches: a look at the numbers behind the first PPA Tour Europe event in Spain.

Barcelona, Spain — October 5th, 2026

The PPA Europe 250 Barcelona Open marked the beginning of a new chapter for professional pickleball in Spain. Held from September 23–27, 2026, the tournament brought together players from around the world for five days of competition.

But beyond the competition itself, the numbers tell the story of the event.

The Tournament by the Numbers

289 players took part in the Barcelona Open, including 117 professional athletes, with players representing 30 countries.

Across five professional divisions — Men’s Singles, Women’s Singles, Men’s Doubles, Women’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles — players competed across 14 competition courts, with a total of 744 matches played during the tournament.

The professional competition featured a €25,000 prize purse, with four players ranked inside the global Top 50 taking part.

112 Medalists. Three Triple Crowns.

The tournament produced 112 medalists, while 10 players managed to win three medals across their events.

Three players went one step further, completing the Triple Crown by winning three gold medals: Judit Castillo, Ángel Trigo, and Asís Garrido.

Behind the Competition

Delivering five days of professional and amateur competition required a large team behind the scenes.

The event involved 30 staff members, 20 volunteers and three referees/officials. Paddle testing was also carried out throughout the tournament, with 702 paddle tests completed across the five days.

For Smash Pickleball Agency, these numbers represent more than a successful tournament. They reflect the scale of what is possible when international players, professional competition and a strong event operation come together.

The Barcelona Open was the first PPA Tour Europe event in Spain — and an important step in the continued growth of professional pickleball across Europe.
